Monday, May 23, 2005My 2 CentsSeeing as everyone else seems to be writing about their views on the latest Star Wars film, I'll put in my 2 cents. I'll just comment on one scene and one incongruity between the two trilogies, as there are other good points that have been made by my brothers Alastair and Peter. There is one scene where our heroes manage to take over a Trade Federation battleship (there are four of them by the way, including one droid), despite the fact that they have only killed a relatively small amount of people. Anakin has managed to kill a dark lord and Obi Wan has been briefly knocked out by a huge piece of structure falling directly onto his torso (although there were no long term effects of course, he was able to do somersaults and fight five minutes later immediately after regaining consciousness), then although the ship has broken in two and practically disintegrated, its engines and most forms of piloting the craft have gone with the other half, Anakin finds a landing strip and almost perfectly lands the ship, with the only real damage being to one little control tower. Presumably they get out alright, without any injuries from the landing. I suppose the other occupants of the ship die during the landing, as we don't hear from them again. Now call me picky, but I think someone with such great films under his belt and such a massive budget at his disposal would be able to make these sorts of scenes a bit more realistic. (I could also mention Anakin's turning to the dark side, but Peter already has). This is by no means a bad film, I'd say it's the best of the three, but these sort of things seem a bit, well, lazy. I would forgive these sort of mistakes if it was due to a lack of resources or something like that, but it seems to be more of a desire to move quickly on to the next amazing scene (or level? A lot of these newer films seem to be communicating very closely with their respective computer games...) The other problem I had was the whole idea of the force. Apart from being very political ('only the dark side deals in absolutes', 'Anakin, my allegiance is to the Republic...to Democracy'), it and the Jedi have completely changed from what they were (or will be, time is very confusing in that galaxy). Now we know that all of that talk about controlling yourself and the slower lightsaber duels was a front. They obviously lost it between the trilogies, because BEFORE, even Yoda, who must have been around 870 years old, could somersault and fight with the best of them. I must admit, I was a bit shocked to see Yoda and Palpatine like that the first time. It's so undignified. I think Lucas tried to tie together the two trilogies too much, to make them seem to flow smoothly together, although it's obvious he had two different things in mind when he created them. A lot of parallel quotes are put in there to show the progression between the two, such as 'he is too young. Too young to start the training.' NOW we know that this is the standard way Jedi use to accept a new recruit. Anyway, there are some of the points I got from Star Wars III. It was a really good film, it's just a pity that there wasn't the space for Lucas to explore, as you could see especially in this film that he had to get everything back to the start of Episode IV. Maybe it would have been better to have just kept with the space time continuum and continued from Episode VII. By the way, Monika says that she liked the architecture and design of Padme and Anakin's apartment, and also the sofas in the Chancellor's office. |
