Wednesday, September 13, 2006![]() Yesterday I listened to a BBC Radio 4 interview with Sherron Watkins, the 'whistle blower' in the Enron scandal. She's been put forward as a feminist icon among other things, but it was interesting to see her view of her actions as coming both from her upbringing in a small town in the north of Texas, where everyone was a lot more accountable to each other and there seems to have been more of a community morality, and from her Christian roots. She refers to Hebrews 12, 'casting off the sin that so easily entangles, etc.' as encouragements to her as she considered standing up against the corruption she saw around her. I must say though, it is quite distasteful to see how these people get shunted straight into the dinner speaking and book writing circuit, while getting an actual job is a lot more difficult after her actions. |
