I went to the demo they had over lunch, where I spent some time discussing the issues with a couple of the demonstrators. I was then invited to a debate about the issues, which was led by a panel of the leader of the demo, a feminist and a pro choice campaigner. There was quite a bit of feminist rubbish about family values and systematic oppression of women by the state, along with fears of hordes of 'militant anti choice activists' with their 'pseudo-science' who threatened to turn the civilised world upside down with their 'lies'. I appeared to be the only person with an 'anti-choice' perspective. There was room for questions afterwards, but I didn't see much point in making a point in one or two sentences, only to be answered by five minutes of response by the panel and angry stares by the rest of the group, so I went up afterwards and asked about the opportunity to debate, only to be told that I'd had it. I did spend some time talking with one of the panel members afterwards, which wasn't particularly helpful, although hopefully I was able to clarify some points with her. The funniest part was a tirade by a male member of the audience during the comments section, which sounded kind of like the black panther speech from Forrest Gump (although not nearly as rational). Male feminists are hilarious. |
