Different

Teacher: Now, kids, Jonathan may not look different from the rest of us, but he is. In his brain.

I found out earlier this week that I probably have dyslexia. Actually, it was funny how this happened, as I was talking to someone else who was explaining the kind of syptoms she had, and I found I could identify with a lot of them. Apparently there are quite a few different kinds of dyslexia, which is why I hadn't really thought of it before (I don't really spell poorly or read out of order or anything, which I thought was one of the things all dyslexics did). I went to the disability office on Monday and answered a number of questions, many of which made sense, so I'm now waiting for a proper diagnosis by a psychologist (which may have to wait a while, as I may not get an appointment before we leave for Tenerife).

It's been good to see all the support that's available at the university, there's even a common room with computers, a work area and staff to help you with any problems you might have. Actually, it feels really weird to have this happening at the moment, of course if I do have dyslexia it isn't severe at all (I don't think I'll actually qualify for a blue sticker in the car after all), but it's kind of strange to talk to people who are similar to you in certain ways (I suppose a bit like Ally and his doppelganger). One thing that has really helped so far is that I sometimes have trouble reading black on white, as the words seem to do funny things to my eyes (as if the words are moving around a bit, or flashing). I actually thought everyone had that, which is why I didn't mention it at all. I was given a coloured plastic thing for reading, and I've started changing the colour of the background on my browser, which has helped quite a bit. To be honest, a lot of this is more about interest than anything else, as I find psychology fascinating and would like to know how I can work with my particular strengths and weaknesses.
